If your Wi-Fi keeps dropping—Zoom freezes, the smart TV “buffers,” the laptop shows “Connected, no internet”—you’re not imagining it. Along Colorado’s I-70 corridor (Strasburg, Byers, Bennett, Watkins, Limon, and the farm and ranch places in between), this is one of the most common problems I walk into. Thick walls, metal buildings, older ISP modem/router combos, and long distances from the router all stack the deck against a stable signal.

Good news: most “Wi-Fi keeps dropping” issues are fixable at home with a methodical checklist. Bad news: randomly buying a bigger router or stacking cheap extenders often makes it worse. Work the steps below in order.
First: is it Wi-Fi, or the whole internet?
Before you blame Wi-Fi, plug a laptop into the modem/router with an Ethernet cable (or use a computer that already has a wired connection).
- Wired works, Wi-Fi drops: it’s your wireless setup (router placement, interference, band settings, or a dying access point).
- Wired also dies: it’s the ISP link, modem, or a failing router’s WAN side—not “Wi-Fi” alone. Call your provider and ask them to check the line and modem signal levels.
That one test saves hours of chasing the wrong problem.
Quick wins that fix a surprising number of dropouts
- Power-cycle the right way. Unplug the modem and the Wi-Fi router (or gateway). Wait a full 60 seconds. Plug the modem in first; wait until it’s fully online. Then plug in the router. If you have mesh satellites or extenders, power those up last.
- Move the router out of the closet / cupboard / entertainment center. Wi-Fi hates enclosed spaces, metal racks, and sitting behind a big TV. Put it up high, in the open, as close to the center of where people actually work and stream as you can.
- Separate the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks temporarily. In the router app or admin page, give them different names (SSIDs)—for example
Home-2GandHome-5G. Connect phones and tablets that roam the house to 2.4 GHz; put nearby laptops and TVs on 5 GHz. “Smart Connect” / band steering is convenient, but when devices keep hopping bands, connections drop. - Forget and rejoin Wi-Fi on the worst device. On that laptop or phone: forget the network, reboot the device, reconnect, and re-enter the password. Corrupt Wi-Fi profiles are more common than people think.
Check for interference and overcrowding
In townhomes and denser subdivisions, neighbors’ networks crowd the same channels. In rural spots, the enemy is often distance plus a microwave, cordless phone base, baby monitor, or a poorly shielded garage door opener on 2.4 GHz.
- In your router settings, set 2.4 GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11 (not “Auto” if Auto keeps flopping). Try each and see which stays solid for a day.
- On 5 GHz, leave Auto or pick a clear channel; avoid DFS channels if your devices drop when weather radar / DFS kicks in (some gear disconnects briefly).
- Turn off old “guest” networks and unused IoT SSIDs you don’t need—every extra radio load adds noise.
- Update the router’s firmware from the manufacturer’s app or support site. Aging firmware is a classic cause of random disconnects.
Stop stacking bad extenders
Those $30 plug-in “range extenders” often create a second weak network with a different name, half the speed, and constant handoff failures. If your Wi-Fi only drops in the back bedroom or shop:
- Best: a wired access point (Ethernet backhaul) or a mesh system with a solid main unit.
- Good: a reputable mesh kit (same brand, designed to work together)—place nodes where each still sees a strong signal from the previous one, not at the dead zone.
- Avoid: mixing three different brands of extenders “to cover more ground.” That almost always increases drops.
For metal shops and outbuildings common out here, Wi-Fi through the metal is a losing fight. Run Ethernet or use a point-to-point wireless bridge designed for that job—not another cheap extender on the workbench.

Windows and phone settings that cause “fake” Wi-Fi drops
Sometimes the router is fine and the device is putting the radio to sleep.
- Windows: Device Manager → Network adapters → your Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management → uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Also set the adapter’s power-saving mode to Maximum Performance in the advanced properties if you see that option.
- Laptops on battery: Windows power plans that throttle the Wi-Fi adapter cause flaky Zoom calls. Test plugged in.
- Phones: disable “Wi-Fi Assistant,” “Auto switch to mobile data,” or similar features while troubleshooting—they can look like drops.
When the hardware itself is tired
ISP-provided gateway boxes from several years ago fail gradually: they reboot overnight, drop only under load (kids streaming + work VPN + cameras), or overheat in a media cabinet. If you’ve done the checklist and drops continue on every device:
- Ask the ISP for a modem refresh, or put their box in bridge mode and use your own quality router.
- Replace consumer routers older than ~5 years if they’re still on ancient Wi-Fi standards and crashing under modern traffic.
- Look for physical clues: router too hot to touch, LAN lights blinking wildly with nothing happening, or the need to reboot daily.
A simple 15-minute stability test
After changes, don’t just load a webpage once. On a laptop:
- Connect to the network you care about.
- Open a command prompt and run:
ping -t 8.8.8.8(or your router’s LAN IP for a pure Wi-Fi test). - Walk the house / office for a few minutes. Occasional blips happen; long strings of “Request timed out” mean you still have a real dropout problem in that spot.
- Press Ctrl+C to stop. Note where it failed.
That map of dead zones tells you whether you need placement changes, a mesh node, or a wired run.
When to call a pro
Call for help if the internet drops on a wired connection too, if you’ve power-cycled and reconfigured bands and still lose Zoom mid-meeting, or if you’re dealing with a shop/outbuilding, cameras, and a small-business network that needs to stay up.
